Getting Started

Main Idea: God can use all people, even those who do not feel worthy. How can God use you?
Discussion Starter: No matter who you are, God has a plan for you. No matter what you do, God has a purpose for where you are. Will you step into the unknown, into God’s amazing plan for you? The future may be unknown, but you can choose to do the next right thing, even if it’s difficult. What is God calling you to do, and have you said “yes”?
Encounter God
Primary Scriptures: Matthew 16:13-20, 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, John 21:15-19
Discussion Questions:
- Just like Queen Elsa, Peter is given great responsibility. Read Matthew 16:13-20. Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus then tells Peter He will build His church on this rock. Do you think Peter shied away from the responsibility Jesus gave Him? Remember not that long after this moment, Peter denied Jesus not once but three times. Is there a time Jesus called you to something and you turned Him down or turned Him away?
- Anna sacrificed her village to bridge a gap between her people and the people of Northuldra. This simple act of obedience gave people hope. Peter did the same thing. In John 21, after Peter denied Jesus, Jesus redeems Peter. How have you been redeemed?
- In 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, Paul becomes all things to appeal to all people. Does this mean you have to sacrifice your morals or beliefs in order to share the Gospel? What do you think Paul means in this passage?
Discovery Bible Method:
For deeper study, as an alternative to the questions above, read Matthew 5:13-16 and use the Discovery Bible Method to explore the passage.
Embrace Others
As Micah mentioned, Disney often put “Easter eggs” in movies to see if fans can find them. You might not realize, but the Bible has some “Easter eggs” as well. There are over 300 prophecies or foreshadowings of Jesus in the Old Testament. For example, the prophecy of the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14) is affirmed in Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 1:26-35. See if you can find any more. Check out Micah 5:2-5, Zechariah 9:9, and Isaiah 50:6. What do prophecies and their fulfillment mean to your faith? This week in your devotional time, go on an Easter egg hunt. Hold each other accountable through the week for reading God’s word, and show off your eggs next week!
Engage the World Around Us
Engage at Faith Promise: What is your next right thing? There are quite a few ways to engage, both in person and online with this Real Love movement. If you do not know what God is calling you to do, sign up for Next Steps. We would love to help you find your gifting and how you can serve others at Faith Promise.
Engage in Community and the World: We have multiple missionaries around the world in a state of flux with COVID-19, just like here at home. Email [email protected] for a list of missionaries and how you can pray for them as they do what God has called them to do. Pray for our mission trips next year as well, since our mission partners rely so much on our teams to help them each year.
Expand God’s Kingdom
We are hopefully headed back to “normal” in the world, or at least closer than we were. You can still tell people your story and invite them to church, whether it is in-person or online. With futures still unknown, many are searching for something to help ease their fear. They do not know that a relationship with Jesus and relying on God can ease that burden. Will you tell them?
