Getting Started

Main Idea: The most important part of our role in Christ’s work is to be faithful with whatever He has put directly in front of us at this moment.
Discussion Starter: What is your calling? And how is God calling you to join Him in saving the world?
Encounter God
Primary Scriptures: Acts 17:29-31, Luke 5:30-32, Luke 16:10, Daniel 3:12-18
Discussion Questions:
- Throughout the New Testament, people didn’t always get specific instructions. Even Jesus’ disciples, did not always get explicit instructions about where to go or what to do. Everyone just shared with anyone who would listen, whenever they were able. The one calling we are sure God gives to everyone can be seen in Acts 17:29-31. Why is repentance (literally, “a change of mind”) what God calls us to, instead of a change in behavior?
- As we consider joining Jesus in His mission to save the world, we see how Jesus ate and spent time with the tax collectors, prostitutes, and sinners. But why did He make this critical to His mission? Read Luke 5:30-32 and discuss Jesus’ answer. Was Jesus there to hang out and have a good time? Did Jesus participate in whatever it was the crowd wanted to do? Or was He there for another reason?
- Many people ask God about what to do next in their lives and are frustrated when God doesn’t answer the way they expect. Many want an amazing and clear and timely revelation from God. Read Luke 16:10 and discuss: Have we been faithful with the revelations we have already received?
- In the Old Testament of the Bible in the book of Daniel, Hebrews were forced to serve king Nebuchadnezzar. In particular, we read of three teenagers stripped of their Hebrew names, who were then given Babylonian names (after the false gods of Babylon): Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Do you think Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew God’s plan and calling in their lives? How might that have affected how they responded to the king’s order?
Discovery Bible Method:
For deeper study, as an alternative to the questions above, read Daniel 3:12-18 and use the Discovery Bible Method to explore the passage.
Embrace Others
Suggestion: Consider breaking the group into twos or threes for this part.
During the past several months of quarantine, most of us caught up on seasons of shows but haven’t spent much time caring for or serving our families or each other. Who is Jesus calling you to serve and care for in your group or in your life? Commit together to ask God who you will connect with and care for and then commit to holding each other accountable for following through this week.
Engage the World Around Us
Engaging at Faith Promise: We have Promisors who are elderly or shut-in. The isolation we’ve experienced lately is actually rather normal and routine for them. Email [email protected] to find out how you can help serve our elderly or other special-needs folks.
Engaging in Community and the World: We have partner schools teaching a hybrid of in-person and online classes now. Pray for the staff, families, and students for a smooth transition for school, with whatever learning type they chose. Pray for seamless technology for all.
Expand God’s Kingdom
In the movie Armageddon, it’s easy to imagine the end of the world for everyone all at once. But every day, the end of the world comes for some people when they don’t expect it. Who is God calling you to share your faith with this week? Commit to pray everyday for opportunities to share your faith and commit to holding each other accountable for following through with praying and sharing this week.
