Famliy Life: Choosing To Say No

Most families that I know have extremely busy schedules. Often, our busyness works in opposition to family time, intimacy in our marriages, and a more sane lifestyle.

I was recently reminded of my own struggles with overcommitment. One morning last week when I was getting ready, my wife, Emily, stated matter-of-factly “You may have to say no” as we discussed my upcoming schedule. It was a great point by Emily. Anytime we say yes to something, by default, we are saying no to something else.

Like many families, our lives are busy. I don’t want our family to miss out on time together because we continually say yes to activities that separate us. A night when the four of us are all at home is precious. The days are passing so quickly. This season with our kids at home will give way to the next phase of life before we know it. I don’t want to look back and regret saying yes to the less important and miss irreplaceable time with my family. What about you?

Do you need to say no more often?
