Set the Table Week 4 – Discussion Guide

Getting Started

Main Idea:
Set the table for a Spirit-filled legacy in your family.

Discussion Starter:
What types of foods are served in your household? Are you a meat and three family or pizza in the oven and thrown-together salad family? How about the meals that were served in your childhood home? What was the scene at the dinner table? Who was present? What was the conversation about? Were you even allowed to have conversation?

Introduction:
Regardless what type of meals we grew up with, we must be intentional about what we are serving spiritually to our families today. Throughout the Bible, we can find lessons that guide us in leading our families and help us prepare for the spiritual warfare or “food fights” that occur along the way. What can techniques or habits can you add to family meals or to your family moments that ensure healthy spiritual choices?

Encounter God

Primary Scriptures: Galatians 5:16-26, Deuteronomy 6:6-7, Psalm 34:8, Romans 2:4, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Ephesians 5:18

Discussion Questions:

  1. In Galatians 5, Paul is contrasting walking in the flesh vs. walking in the Spirit. What are some behaviors and attitudes you see around your dinner table and in your family that can be attributed to living in the flesh?
  2. What are some behaviors and attitudes that can be seen in your household that stem from the Spirit? Are there any practices your family has put into place to minimize the flesh tendencies and increase the Spirit-filled ones?
  3. Pastor spoke about sprinkling, stirring, and drizzling various biblical habits into our family meals and our lives in general. Read through the other scriptures listed above. What are some techniques you find in these scriptures that you can implement in your home?

Discovery Bible Method:
For deeper study, as an alternative to the questions above, read Galatians 5:16-26 and use the Discovery Bible Method to explore the passage.

Embrace Others

Suggestion: Consider breaking the group into dyads or triads for this section.

  1. What is one practice you can take home and implement this week into your family that you learned from the sermon or in your group through the discussion questions?
  2. What are some weaknesses that your group members have expressed to each other that you can pray over nightly to encourage them as they go into next week?
  3. Pray together over one another for strength and guidance as you focus on making God the centerpiece of your household and as you grow your “holy hunger.”

Engage the World Around Us

Engaging at Faith Promise:  Pastor talked about setting an example by the lives we live and the spiritual food we are serving our families. What ways do you lead your families by serving here at Faith Promise?

Engaging in Community and the World:  Whether you are helping a nonprofit or attending your child’s T-ball game, how can you be God’s hands and feet? What are some ways that people can see HIS light in your family?

Also, we are doing the SERVE day across the country on July 13, 2019. Have you and your family signed up?

Expand God’s Kingdom

Who can you invite to some of your family dinners? This is the perfect place for someone to witness God moving in your family in a very natural setting. After they enjoy dinner with your family, invite them to Faith Promise for some spiritual nourishment!
