The wrong master in the bedroom will destroy your marriage bed.
If you are married, how long have you been married? If you are not married, think of a married couple you know and admire. What sets their marriage apart?
This week we reread 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 and use that passage on love as a lens as we look at who is “master of the bedroom” in the stories of Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Jacob, Leah, and Rachel.
Primary Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, Genesis 16:1-5, Genesis 30:1-8
- First, read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. Make a list of what love is and what love is not. If you are meeting virtually, have someone be the “scribe”, make a list, and share a photo of their list via text message so everyone can refer to it as we look at the passages in Genesis. Alternatively, have the host/group leader share their screen and display the table from the Leaders’ Notes for question 1.
- Read Genesis 16:1-5. What aspects of love (what it is and what it is not) do you see in this story? Who do you think is “master of the bedroom”? God? Abraham? Sarah? Hagar? How does it work out?
- Read Genesis 30:1-8. Again, look at your love list from question 1. What aspects of love do you see or not see in this story? Who is “master of the bedroom” here?
Discovery Bible Method:
For deeper study, as an alternative to the questions above, read Genesis 30:1-22 and use the Discovery Bible Method to explore the passage.
