Rooms Week 3 – Discussion Guide
Getting Started
Main Idea:
The wrong master in the bedroom will destroy your marriage bed.
Discussion Starter:
If you are married, how long have you been married? If you are not married, think of a married couple you know and admire. What sets their marriage apart?
Introduction:
This week we reread 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 and use that passage on love as a lens as we look at who is “master of the bedroom” in the stories of Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Jacob, Leah, and Rachel.
Encounter God
Primary Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, Genesis 16:1-5, Genesis 30:1-8
Discussion Questions:
- First, read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. Make a list of what love is and what love is not. If you are meeting virtually, have someone be the “scribe”, make a list, and share a photo of their list via text message so everyone can refer to it as we look at the passages in Genesis. Alternatively, have the host/group leader share their screen and display the table from the Leaders’ Notes for question 1.
- Read Genesis 16:1-5. What aspects of love (what it is and what it is not) do you see in this story? Who do you think is “master of the bedroom”? God? Abraham? Sarah? Hagar? How does it work out?
- Read Genesis 30:1-8. Again, look at your love list from question 1. What aspects of love do you see or not see in this story? Who is “master of the bedroom” here?
Discovery Bible Method:
For deeper study, as an alternative to the questions above, read Genesis 30:1-22 and use the Discovery Bible Method to explore the passage.
Embrace Others
Suggestion: Consider breaking the group into twos or threes for this section.
Pastor asked married couples to consider these questions:
Are you talking with each other?
Are you believing in each other?
Are you hoping for each other?
Are you praying for each other?
What is your spouse’s word for the year? Verse for the year?
Some of these things may be difficult logistically due to schedules or childcare. Some may be hard because you never saw them modeled in your family of origin. Discuss ways to overcome the hurdles and prioritize these things in your marriage. If you are not married, you can still discuss how to pray for group members and learn about their word and goals for the year.

Expand God’s Kingdom
Jesus said, “go and make disciples of all nations.” A disciple is someone who follows a teacher and desires to be like that teacher. We are all at different stages of life physically and spiritually. We can learn from those in front of us and teach those behind us. Who is your teacher? How are you teaching others to follow Jesus?
Leader’s Notes
- 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
ALL groups at Faith Promise should follow Jesus Christ and lead others to do the same. Below are the marks of a growing follower and disciple of Jesus.
– A follower of Jesus desires to encounter God through the deeper study and application of God’s Word.
– A follower of Jesus embraces people and values relationships on a deeper level so everyone can grow together.
– A follower of Jesus engages and serves the world around them and in their community, through local partners or God-directed opportunities.
– A follower of Jesus expands God’s Kingdom through development and multiplication of disciple-makers, possibly to lead more groups at Faith Promise.
