Parent Connection – fpStudents
Series: Stars
Focus: School Year Kickoff
Family Discussion:
Parents, brace yourselves. The Fall Semester is here. I know! Where did the summer go?!
This year, just like last year, your student will be faced with a question. That question is “What is your purpose this year?” Most students don’t answer this question at all, but they wait until the end of the semester and are confused as to where they ended up. Whether it is homework, relationships, extracurricular activities or a job, if your student doesn’t decide now what their purpose is, they will never end up where they want to be. So, what should our purpose be?
Philippians 2:14-15 – “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe.”
As Christians it can be easy to think that our goal should be to simply be good. Make the right decisions and move on, right? Well, kind of. Paul tells us that our actions and attitudes matter, so we shouldn’t complain or argue, but our purpose isn’t simply to “be good”. We are designed to shine like stars in a dark sky, to stand and look different than our surroundings. God has created us and given us the tools to draw others towards Him so that He may have a relationship with a world that doesn’t know Him.
Discussion Questions:
– How comfortable are you when it comes to standing out for Jesus?
– When was the last time you were seen as different because of your obedience to Christ?
– What is your family’s purpose this semester? How are you working to complete it?
Coming Soon: On August 17 we will start a series called “Friday Night Lights” that will help us see the impact that our walk with Christ has. During this series we will have a “Two-A-Days” Student Reading Plan available. Make sure to get one for your family so that you can all read along together for this 21 day study.
