Series: “Alive”
Focus: The Supremacy of Christ
Family Discussion:
Parents, over the next three weeks, we will be focusing on the book of Colossians, and we want to encourage you to use the following “Daily Reading Guide” as your parent resource throughout this series. Each day there is a small portion of scripture to read, as well as some questions to get them thinking about what they just read. I want to encourage you as a parent to use the same guide as well. Find some time during the week to discuss your answers with your student as well as their answers.
Day 1: Read Colossians 1:1-8 and answer the following questions:
- What is Paul saying in this passage and what is God saying to you in this passage?
- Paul explains that he thanks God for the faith of the Colossians. Take a moment and thank God for those around you whose faith in Christ has affected you in a positive way.
Day 2: Read Colossians 1:9-10 and answer the following questions:
- What is Paul saying in this passage, and what is God saying to you in this passage?
- Paul prays specifically for the Colossians’ walk with God, that they might be filled with wisdom and understanding. When was the last time you prayed for your friends’ faith and walk with God? Take a moment to do so now.
- When was the last time you asked God to fill you with wisdom and understanding? Take a moment to do so now.
Day 3: Read Colossians 1:11-14, then answer the following questions:
- What is Paul saying in this passage ,and what is God saying to you in this passage?
- Look again at v.13-14. Think back to when you first experienced Jesus forgiving your sins. How does it feel to be set free from a life of sin (the domain of darkness) and made a part of the kingdom of Christ? Take a moment and thank God for this blessing.
Day 4: Read Colossians 1:15-17, then answer the following questions:
- What is Paul saying in this passage and what is God saying to you in this passage?
- This passage explains one of the reasons Jesus came to earth – to reveal the glory of God (v.15). Jesus has made God easy to see, demonstrating who God is. What are some of the things this passage tells us about who God is?
Day 5: Read Colossians 1:18-20, then answer the following questions:
- What is Paul saying in this passage, and what is God saying to you in this passage?
- Verse 20 explains that Christ has come to make peace between people and God by the sacrifice Jesus made when He died for our sins. Do you know anyone who hasn’t experienced the peace of Christ in their lives? Pray that Jesus might show up in their lives and that they might receive Jesus.
Day 6: Read Colossians 1:21-23, then answer the following questions:
- What is Paul saying in this passage, and what is God saying to you in this passage?
- Yesterday our passage talked about peace with God. This type of peace goes beyond just peace with God into peace with others. As Christians we are supposed to be united as one with other believers. Is there anyone you need to make peace with?
Day 7: Read Colossians 1:24-29, then answer the following questions:
- What is Paul saying in this passage, and what is God saying to you in this passage?
- Paul explains that it is his job to make Jesus Christ fully known. As followers of Christ we all have this responsibility. Pray that the Holy Spirit would give you an opportunity and the strength to share Jesus with someone today.
