Recently my wife Emily and I met with some of our daughter Maggie’s teachers to develop an educational plan for the next school year. The primary focus of the meeting was defining Maggie’s current academic levels and determining the best path for her to experience the desired progress for the next year. I walked away from our meeting thankful for my daughter’s teachers and school administrator’s, excited and confident that we had the beginnings of a good plan for the next steps in Maggie’s education.
As I reflected on this experience I began to consider “do we have the same level of intentionality with our child’s spiritual growth/development as we have with their educational development?” How often do we sit down and consider where our kids are on their faith journey? Have we determined how we can best help them, who we can enlist to “widen the circle” of influence? I am a huge advocate (public school educator for 24 years) for the importance of a strong education. However, nothing is more important than our kid’s faith and growth in Christ.
